Etsy insert card rules are not collected in one dedicated public policy. Etsy's Seller Handbook discusses branded packaging and thank-you notes, while its Seller Policy restricts off-platform transactions and review manipulation. Keep cards useful and have Etsy or a qualified reviewer assess the complete journey.

Etsy insert card rules: the rule, verbatim

Etsy's current Off-Platform Transactions Policy lists this prohibited example:

“Using a QR code to direct users off of the Etsy platform.”

The policy applies that example to taking Etsy-originated communications or transactions off-platform. Etsy's current Seller Policy also requires sellers not to facilitate off-platform transactions. Its communication standards prohibit using Etsy Messages for unsolicited promotions or for offering discounts or incentives to purchase through another website or channel.

Etsy's first-party Seller Handbook packaging guidance says sellers may want branded packaging and materials such as business cards and thank-you notes. A separate handbook article discusses packaging and promotional materials. Handbook inspiration does not override the Seller Policy. A thank-you note may be a lower-risk format, but adding an external checkout, review manipulation, or undisclosed data collection changes the analysis.

What's allowed and what's not

Lower-risk starting pointReject or escalate
A genuine thank-you, Etsy shop name, accurate care instructions, materials, sizing, or product-use information, consistent with Etsy's Seller Handbook.A QR code or discount that directs an Etsy buyer to purchase through another website or channel, contrary to the Off-Platform Transactions Policy.
Instructions for using Etsy's approved Help with Order or Messages experience, reviewed for accuracy.A request to move order support, additional payment, or the transaction into an external message or payment service.
A neutral reminder that feedback is optional, only after the exact wording is reviewed against Etsy's Seller Policy.A reward for a favorable review, shilling, or any process that falsely inflates a shop's score or undermines review integrity.
A brand story that accurately represents who made, designed, handpicked, or sourced the item.False, deceptive, or misleading claims about the product, shop, provenance, materials, or maker.

“Lower-risk” does not mean Etsy-approved. Etsy does not pre-approve the examples in this article. The card's purpose, exact words, destination, item category, buyer location, and follow-up determine the real risk. A business card mentioned in editorial guidance is not permission to divert an Etsy transaction.

Real consequences under Etsy policy

The current Seller Policy says Etsy may deactivate content, suspend or terminate an account and related accounts, or restrict access when it has reason to believe the seller, content, or use of services violates its terms. It also describes possible listing-visibility limits, payment-account reserves or restrictions, and account suspension in specified risk circumstances.

Etsy's Off-Platform Transactions Policy explains that Etsy Purchase Protection and its case system are not available for transactions that take place off Etsy. That is a customer-protection consequence of moving the transaction, not an invented suspension story. The actual enforcement response depends on the facts and Etsy's terms.

Printed cards can outlive a campaign. A changed webpage does not remove an external-purchase prompt inside completed orders, and replacing the card does not disable an old QR redirect. Preserve each version, identify the orders or production lots that received it, and keep screenshots of the destination as it appeared during use.

How to do this compliantly

Begin with useful product information. A concise thank-you, care guide, materials note, assembly step, or accurate maker story can improve the unboxing experience without turning the package into a sales diversion. Keep claims consistent with the listing and the actual item.

Review every call to action. Ask what happens after a scan or typed URL: Does the buyer reach Etsy, another checkout, a payment request, an email form, a review screen, or support? Etsy's policy expressly identifies QR codes used for off-platform redirection, so a visual code needs the same scrutiny as printed text.

Separate support, reviews, and customer ownership. Give order help through Etsy's approved tools. Do not route sentiment so happy buyers see a public-review path and unhappy buyers disappear into private support. Any proposed direct marketing relationship requires transparent, voluntary consent and separate privacy and marketing review; this page does not establish that a particular opt-in is permitted.

Compare the card with the listing and shop presentation. Materials, dimensions, origin, maker, processing, care, and availability statements should agree everywhere. If the card introduces a claim that does not appear in the approved listing evidence, substantiate and review it before printing. A warm brand story is still commercial content and must accurately represent the item and seller.

Give production partners a controlled file and purpose. Record the card version used for each order range, retire old QR redirects, and prevent packers from adding unapproved coupons or external-contact stickers. If a destination changes from information to data collection or sales, restart the review even when the printed code remains identical.

Finally, save the policy version, card artwork, destination captures, approval, and print date. Recheck before each run and after any redirect, offer, form, review, or message change. Etsy's current policy is the controlling source; Seller Handbook examples are context, not guaranteed compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Does Etsy publish a dedicated insert-card policy?
No single current policy found in this review answers every physical-card question. Use the cited Seller Policy, off-platform rule, and Seller Handbook together.
Can a seller add a handwritten thank-you note?
Etsy's Seller Handbook discusses thank-you notes, but that guidance is not a safe harbor for added links, offers, review language, or data collection.
Can an Etsy insert send buyers to another shop?
Do not use a card to move an Etsy-originated purchase to another channel. Review the current off-platform policy quoted and linked above.
What should be checked behind a QR code?
Resolve every redirect and document the destination, transaction path, form fields, consent language, review routing, support options, and follow-up messages.
Can Top Concierge approve an Etsy insert?
No. It can support a clear post-purchase experience, but Etsy policy, the actual card, and applicable marketing and privacy law require human review.
